Scholarship Summary:
The Banneker/Key Scholarship is the most prestigious merit scholarship offered to incoming UMD freshmen (US citizens and residents only). In selecting Banneker/Key Scholars, the selection committee seeks to identify potential academic leaders, who as individuals and as a group, will enrich and benefit from the campus learning environment.
Scholarship Applicant Criteria:
There are no set criteria for eligibility but past recipients were in the top 5% of the applicant pool.
Value of Scholarship:
The Banneker/Key Scholarship can cover up to the full cost of tuition, mandatory fees, room and board, a book allowance, and includes admission to the Honors College.
Scholarship Application Guide:
To be considered for the Banneker/Key Scholarship,
i. All domestic freshman applicants to the University of Maryland who meet the early action deadline of November 1 and are invited to the Honors College will be considered for nomination to the Banneker/Key Scholarship. No additional application materials are required.
ii. The Banneker/Key Scholarship Selection Committee members carefully review the entire application of each Banneker/Key Scholarship nominee. In selecting Banneker/Key Scholars, the Committee seeks to identify potential academic leaders, who as individuals and as a group, will enrich and benefit from the campus learning environment.
iii. Semi-finalists for the scholarship are invited to campus for an interview as part of the final selection process. Banneker/Key Semi-finalists will receive their interview invitation in late February or early March and they will be notified of their final scholarship award by April 1. Each fall, UMD welcomes about 150 new Banneker/Key Scholars to campus.
iv. Banneker/Key Scholars must maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or better each semester and complete a minimum number of credits per year
