Scholarship Summary:
W&L's Johnson Scholarship Program selects students (domestic and international) on the basis of academic achievement, demonstrated leadership and their potential to contribute to the intellectual and civic life of the W&L campus and of the world at large in years to come. Johnson Scholarships are awarded to approximately 10% of each entering class.
Scholarship Applicant Criteria:
Approximately 10% of each entering class (~44 students) for the Johnson Scholarship will be selected on the basis of academic achievement and demonstrated leadership. They will be judged on their potential to contribute to the intellectual and civic life of the W&L campus and of the world at large in years to come. Writing samples, teacher recommendations, and records of leadership, citizenship, and involvement in non-academic activities will be weighed.
Value of Scholarship:
Johnson Scholarships cover tuition and fees, housing and food, and $10,000 in funding for a summer experience — a grand total of more than $89,000 per year.
Students with additional financial need may also see their scholarship amount increased to cover additional costs of attendance, which may include textbooks and supplies, travel expenses, and technology costs.

- A complete Common Application including the W&L Johnson Scholarship supplement, which consists of a second personal essay.
- An official copy of your high school transcript
- Self-reported or official scores from the SAT or ACT (optional) {W&L's SAT code is 5887 and W&L's ACT code is 4430}
- Two Teacher recommendations
- One recommendation letter from your guidance or college counselor
- The common Application Secondary School Report form, completed by your guidance or college counselor
ii. Finalists for the Johnson Scholarship will be notified in early February and invited to campus for the scholarship selection competition. All costs associated with attending the competition will be paid by Washington and Lee University, including travel expenses (airfare or mileage costs), meals and lodging for the duration of the competition.
iii. Scholarship winners will be notified in late March with full details about the scholarship award.
