Scholarship Summary:
Spelman College (a women-only college) awards a limited number of merit-based scholarships to new incoming first-year domestic students. Recipients are selected from a competitive pool of students based on the academic profile and details submitted in the application. The committee considers those who demonstrate strong academic performance and engagement in high school.
This determination is based on the grade point average, standardized test scores, community service and leadership. Financial assistance at Spelman for international applicants is limited.
Scholarship Applicant Criteria:
To be considered, students must;
i. Be in the top 20% of the applicant pool. Typically, the average GPA for scholarship recipients in an incoming freshman class is a 4.1 GPA.
Value of Scholarship:
Spelman offers the following scholarships to selected students who fall into the scholarship eligible pool;
A. Presidential Scholarship
The Presidential Scholarship is a renewable scholarship that covers tuition, fees and on-campus room and board.
B. Dewitt Dean’s Scholarship
The Dean’s Scholarship covers full tuition only for four years.
C. Academic Scholarship
The academic scholarship covers half tuition.
D. Student of Distinction
SOD is valued at $5,000 - $15,000 per year for four years.
E. Bonner Scholars
Based on community service, this is a need-based scholarship and the award is calculated based on financial need.
Scholarship Application Guide:
Spelman does not require a separate application process for scholarship consideration nor do students have to request to be considered. Admitted students who meet the minimum requirements will automatically be reviewed.
