Scholarship Summary:
Major entrance scholarships are awarded to exceptional undergraduates (Canadian and international) entering in the fall semester. Recipients are determined by selection committees and awarded on the basis of academic achievement and outstanding leadership in school or community activities.
Scholarship Applicant Criteria:
Emphasis is placed on academic excellence as the first priority criteria*, followed by demonstrated leadership. Please note that "leadership" constitutes more than simple participation in extracurricular activities.
*Academic criteria is same as the one-year entrance scholarship criteria.
Value of Scholarship:
The McGill Major Entrance Scholarship are valued as CAD$3,000, CAD$5,000, CAD$10,000 and CAD$12,000.
*CAD$12,000 scholarships are only available to Canadian citizens or legal permanent residents of Canada.
Major entrance scholarships are renewable up to 3 or 4 years provided criteria for renewal are met.
Scholarship Application Guide:
To apply;
1. After you submit your application for admission to McGill, you will receive an email acknowledging your application.
This email will provide you with your:
• McGill ID number
• PIN used to log on Undergraduate Admissions Application Portal.
Deadlines for admission application submission
i. Quebec Students: 1st March
ii. Other Canadian Students: 1st February
iii. US and International Students: 15th January
2. Log on to the Portal and go to: Applicant > Apply for Major Undergraduate Entrance Scholarship.
- The application must be completed soon after submitting your application for admission
3. You will be prompted to provide specific information which may include some or all of the following:
• A factual list of your school activities and community/volunteer involvement for the last three academic years (including athletic/artistic and other activities)
• A general essay either on a contemporary or historical figure that influenced/inspired you, or on a memorable event/experience which provided you with a new outlook on life
• A one-page letter of reference that you have written – for yourself – in the third person

5. Documentation requirements:
- Two letters of reference: One academic and one activity-related letter of reference. Letters should be typed on letterhead stationery, duly signed and converted to PDF, then submitted directly by the referees on the Undergraduate Admissions Applicant Portal.
- Ranking/Signed statement: A signed statement from your school indicating the size of your class and your class rank, if your school provides such information. All documents should be provided on school letterhead. Please note: If your school does not rank or if the class rank is available on a student's transcript, there is no need for any stateme
6. Applications for major scholarships are reviewed by members of the selection committee that determine the finalists. Finalists may be interviewed. Students who apply for, but do not receive, a major scholarship will automatically be considered for a one-year entrance scholarship. No additional application is required.
