Scholarship Summary: 
MIT scholarships are awarded based solely on financial need and come from endowments, gifts from MIT alumni and friends, and MIT general funds. All students (domestic and international) who apply for financial aid and fill out the CSS profile are automatically considered for an MIT scholarship. 60% of undergraduate students will receive an MIT scholarship.

Scholarship Applicant Criteria:
To be eligible for consideration, applicants must;
i. Apply by the January 6th deadline and be admitted into MIT. 
ii. Demonstrate financial need

As a guide, about 58% of incoming undergraduates will receive MIT Scholarships.

Value of Scholarship: 
The MIT Scholarship will meet 100% of the demonstrated need of each recipient. As a guide, the average grant was $66,663 for 2023–2024.

Scholarship Application Guide: 
To apply, fill out the following required forms;
1. CSS Profile: a tool provided by the College Board that MIT uses to determine if you qualify for a need-based MIT Scholarship. Designate MIT as one of your recipients using the CSS code 3514.

2. Create your FSA ID (for domestic students only): Create or reconfirm your Federal Student Aid ID (FSA ID) as soon as possible. Students and parents are not able to share an account on the Federal Student Aid site. If you are a student, parent, or other contributor, you need to create your own account. 
  • Once completed, it will take 5 business days for your account to be activated before you can fill out the FAFSA.
3. FAFSA (for domestic students only): the form you need to fill out to receive any federal or state student aid (Required for US citizens and permanent residents only). Designate MIT as one of your recipients using the Federal Code 002178
  • Please note: The 2025–2026 FAFSA will not be available until December. 
4. Parental tax returns or income documentation: your parents’ tax returns or income documentation must be submitted through the College Board’s secure IDOC platform.
  • For international students, please provide the tax return from your country, along with a translation to English if applicable.
